Grand Haven is a small city in western Michigan. It is positioned in Ottawa County and serves as the county seat. Grand Haven is located 5 miles west of Grand Rapids and less than 5 miles from the beaches of Lake Michigan. According to the United States Census Bureau, Grand Haven was home to approximately 10,911 people in 2016.
Before European settlers arrived in western Michigan, Native American Indians occupied the land. White settlers arrived in the area of modern-day Grand Haven after Rix Robinson, an American Fur Company employee, acquired the rights to lands in the Grand Haven area and established trading posts. According to the city website, “Less than a year later Grand Haven’s first permanent white settlers, Rev. William Montague Ferry, with family and friends, sailed down the east coast of Lake Michigan to the mouth of the Grand River.” After his arrival, Montague constructed permanent dwellings and established his community as the first set of permanent settlers of Grand Haven.
